Is Previous Throacic Sympathectomy a Risk Factor for Exertion?

Synopsis: A review of experiments involving the depth of cuts during surgery for hyperhidrosis. The hyperhidrosis

Scenario: A physically fit and healthy young man had a heat stroke after running a 10 kilometer race. He had previously received a bilateral thoracic sympathectomy for excessive sweating and was known to have reduced upper body sweating. The authors noted that thoracic sympathectomy can result in reduced sweating (the aim of course), and unfortunately, both altered peripheral vascular and heart rate responses. Quite a risk in surgery for hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating).

Conclusion: Reduction in excessive sweating is the goal in operations such as thoracic sympathectomy, however, this seemingly simple aim can have serious, and sometimes such as in this case, life threatening consequences. Participation in long distance running events, or any strenuous exercise, should be evaluated by anyone who has undergone a thoracic sympathectomy for hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). One must balance the absence of excessive sweating with the potential for too little sweating during strenuous exercise, along with altered vascular and heart rate. In this particular case, the said patient should have weighed his love for physical activity against the severity of his heavy perspiration, then finding the importance of solving his sweating problem.
